Why do boats spray water in or into the air?

March 30, 2010 - 12:10 pm 9 Comments

Often time boats in the New York Harbor will spray multiple streams of water into the air as a fountain.

I have learned through googling that this practice is done by tug boats, and often as a form of "fireworks" when a military ship comes back to port.

My questions are:
1. Can you collaborate, correct, and/or add to what I’ve found?
2. Why do they do this and/or what is the history?
3. Why do tug boats have this capability, is it a firefighting capability?
4. Do they do it for any other reason.

Thanks.

Tugboats often have this capability. They may act as fireboats, since they’re often around on the waterfront, and may be the first one on the scene of a boat fire. Some major cities have fireboats also, but they may not be in the area when a fire breaks out. It’s expensive to keep a boat and crew patrolling the waterfront, just in case.

They also do this as a salute. It might be for holidays, or when a dignitary of some sort or a famous ship visits, or for festivals, etc.

How has the evolution of freestyle skiing been affected by the changes in culture?

How has freestyle skiing evolved in the past 30 years?

It almost died out fifteen years ago. Gone were the likes of Glen Plake and Wayne Wong. Mogul comps were all about time. Then along came snowboarding.

Snowboarding is the single biggest influence on skiing in the past 15 years. Back in the day…the terrain park was off limits to 2-plankers like me and my buds. Of course we poached it, and got nabbed by Patrol, but there was no way to stop it. Then twin-tips came out, and after Mosely was told he couldn’t throw the Dinner Roll by the IOC all bets were off. Last year, at a trade show, certain ski company reps were showing off some charts showing how the amount of ‘boarders has reached a plateau and how freestyle skiing has risen significantly. New riders are equal to the amount of riders switching to planks or leaving snowsports all together while twin-tip sales are going through the roof. All of that is good in my book.

The downside, in my opinion, is that many of the freestylers have an "outlaw" attitude. Snowboarding had become the norm in many places. So in order to be different (and more bad-ass) more folks took up freestyle. Of course, they had to have worse manners than snowboarders. I do have to admit that the best freestylers I know are great people with very good demeanors. It seems the posers and wanna-bes are the people with a chip on their shoulders.

Ski wear has always been affected by popular fashion. I was in a Hot Topic store today and 75% of what was for sale there looked like 75% of the stuff I see most knuckledraggers and freestylers wearing at the slope. I also think since the advent of the Sony Walkman and the ability to have portable music with you on the slopes, tunes have had a great influence on skiing. In 1993 I had a 120 minute cassette mix with bands such as Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, and Social Distortion that I played over-and-over while skiing. It was loud, fast, and hard and that’s how I skied. Since then, the music has become even harder and faster (to some extents) and so has the skiing.

Lastly, I think the marketing appeal of extreme sports in general has greatly contributed to the changes in freestyle skiing. I have a set of K2 Extreme skis in my shed somewhere..but the best marketing gimmick in the past 15 years has been the Salomon X-Scream line. X-Scream…ha. 70% of the people I see on these skis don’t do anything more "X-Scream" than riding the lift with the bar up.

How do back-to-back cruises work?

March 27, 2010 - 3:11 pm 3 Comments

We will be taking our first back-to-back cruises very soon. We have the cabin number for the first cruise, but not for the second. If we change cabins, what do we have to do? If we stay in the same cabin, what do we have to do? In either case, can we get off the ship and spend the day in the city, or do we have to stay on the ship? Do we have to settle our on-board account as separate cruises, or can we pay it all at the end of the second cruise? Serious advice is appreciated.

If you need to move, then your room steward will help you move your things. You need to do the packing though. You also need to go to the designated place to settle up your sail and sign card and be issued a new one. This is quite quick and you will be given directions about what to do near the end of your first cruise. You may certainly leave the ship after this and explore the city, have lunch, shop or do an excursion. For more information from veteran cruisers you could log into cruisecritic.com. I have learned so much there.

How much can I make cleaning the bottoms of boats?

March 27, 2010 - 3:11 pm 3 Comments

I am considering becoming dive certified. I have a friend who said we can make a lot of money cleaning the bottoms (hulls) of boats. Is this good work? Can you get paid decent money doing it? How much exactly?

here is and excellent site that describes in detail how to clean the bottom of a boat in the water

http://www.bitwrangler.com/wt/bottom-cleaning.html

as far as making $$$$, its not a job that will allow you to get rich, but with luck and good marketing you may be able to earn a living. most divers will charge about $50.00 per boat for cleaning plus the cost of zinc replacement. the way to be sucessful is to work with marina managers and boat owners to coordinate bottom cleaning days so that you are able to clean several boats at one location on the same day.

hope this helps

Where would I look to see if the Time Share that I just invested in is worth me investing in it or not?

March 27, 2010 - 3:11 pm 3 Comments

I just invested in a Time Share with Rangley Lake Resorts and would like to know if it is a good investment or not for me to be in so could you please help me?

time shares are terrible investments. You now have to vacation in the exact same place every year. You often pay about the same as if you simply rented a hotel (and you could change vacation sposts if you did). Also, they are very hard to unload. As long as new units are being sold, it will be very difficult for you to sell it.

Every financial advisor I have ever listened to has advised against a time share unless you truly vacation there every single year and expect to continue. Even then, they usually say you could probably not pay much more by renting when the time arives.

What are some decent gloves for skiing that are not homo looking?

What are some decent gloves for skiing that are not homo looking like North Face (I am a prep bitch) gloves?
CWStufff you are obviously admitting your gayness. Go live in San Fran. you will like it there.

Any Mountain have some good ones so does REI. I found a set that were plain black, with Gortex, good lining and swade on the palms and thumb. I got them for about $70 at Any Mountain.
